The History

I've always been overweight, ever since I was school age; about 5 years old. I didn't suffer from excessive bullying throughout primary school (at least nothing to match the horror stories you hear about from time to time) but I did get the occasional tease and while I'd laugh it off, it's always bothered me.

But I consider myself pretty lucky to have found a group of friends that I love and that I can be around without feeling judged or treated any differently than anyone else (keyword=feeling; we all do a little judging sometimes :P).

In school years 10 & 11, my weight hovered at about 85kg (187 lbs) and standing at 5"7', that's a 29.3 on the Body Mass Index (BMI), which rates very high in the overweight category. I started a job at McDonald's midway through year 10 and the half price meals really did me in! I hardly ever ate Maccas before I began working there (I had no idea what a Big Mac was) and when you can get an entire meal for $AU3 or less (with the 50% discount), the temptation was too great for someone that was always short of cash :P

So, by the middle of year 11, I had reached 91kg (200 lbs). I didn't weigh myself for a long time after that (denial is bliss!) but when I reached the USA in January 2004, I felt fatter than ever. And I was right. I tipped the scales at 215 pounds (that's almost 98kg!!). For those of you following my BMI, that put me at 33.7 - well into the OBESE category and at serious health risk.

Mum and I went on a mission to lose weight and for the first 3-4 weeks, we were doing incredibly well. I lost about 12 pounds (5 kg) in the first 3 weeks after I cut back entirely on takeout, (that's what Maccas will do to you - STAY AWAY!) and started exercising daily, alternating between a cardio workout and lifting weights.

Then I hit the proverbial wall and I stopped trying. I have no idea why (I rarely understand my own actions) because the plan was working. I have no doubt that if I'd kept up the regime, I'd be a thinner girl today. Which is, of course, why I'm taking it up again. I'm just lazy and lack self-discipline. But, with my 18th birthday looming, I've slapped myself in the face (metaphorically speaking.. though wouldn't that be funny if I had!) and said enough is enough.
